Art Movies to watch while you’re in iso

There’s some great art movies to catch up on if you’re ready to put your feet up for a couple of hours.

1.Basquiat

Basquiat (1996). I saw this movie at the cinema when it came out and tbh the only thing i remembered about it was some of the actors and that I left the cinema having enjoyed the film. What I couldn’t recall was the art in it or much more.

So I found it online and rewatched. And I do recommend it. It’s been applauded over the years and often referred to, but it really is watchable and certainly enjoyable, and an interesting representation of the art scene in NYC in the early 1980’s , as presented by someone who was part of that scene. The film was directed by Julian Schnabel, who is also in the film in the form of the Gary Oldman character, Albert Milo.

2. Mrs Lowry and Son

Mrs Lowry and Son available on Netflix - this one is on my list to watch. Starring Timothy Spall as LS Lowry and Vanessa Redgrave as his ailing mother.

3. Lust For Life

Lust For Life (1956) is a biodrama about the life of Vincent Van Gogh starring Kirk Douglas and was Oscar nominated. Again this is one i plan to re watch as it’s probably been like 20 years since I last saw it. Available to view online on Amazon

4. Modigliani

Andy Garcia plays Modigliani in this film set in Paris 1919 and centres around the artist’s rivalry with Picasso and his relationship with Jeanne. Both Picasso and Modigliani believe the impending Paris art competition to be beneath them yet both seek the prize money and career guarantees that come with the prize.

5. Frida

Frida (2002) starring Salma Hayek as the Mexican artist. The film charts her life, her marriage to Diego Rivera and is colour filled echoing the vibrancy and energy of the protagonist living a turbulent life. This is one film that certainly helps people understand the complex woman and her paintings, and the pouring of life into her art. Available on Amazon
