The Designer Maker's favourite photographer - Yeshen Venema

The designer-maker’s favourite photographer, Yeshen Venema is my guest on this episode of the podcast. He talks about preparing for a professional photo shoot so that you can get your art and products looking their best. If you have ever applied for a fair, a market, an event or anything similar you will have been asked to submit images which is then used in their marketing. Even stockists and galleries often use the maker’s photos on their website and social media. As such the photos are used beyond your own website and social media feed and that is why investing in a professional is always a good idea.

Five things I learned from Yeshen

  1. He does shoots on location and also at his studio in north London

  2. Styling your photos to speak to your customers and connect with the right audience is part of the process of the photoshoot

  3. He enjoys working with stylists who are often under appreciated but add alot of value to the photoshoot as well as being an extra pair of hands on set.

  4. He suggests having an inspiration page on your website that shows the sources from which you draw and not only sharing that on social media. The images of what inspires your art or designs add context and some back story to your creative process and help visitors to your website connect with the maker

  5. While he isn’t a portrait photographer he would like more makers to have a photo of themselves on their website. People actively buy direct from the maker these days, so putting a face to the name makes it that much easier for potential customers to make a connection with a real person.
