COVID-19 and the Art World - with Sam Peacock

Sam Peacock returns as my guest on the podcast and we talk about the effect of coronavirus on the art world this last week as fairs are cancelling and postponing their Spring 2020 editions.

In this episode Sam Peacock and I talk about the things that artists can be doing during this time of social distancing to build their art business for a stronger future. There is no doubt that this is a time where everyone is feeling anxious about what is to come and asking how long this will go on. This understandably leads to worries about money and finances.

  1. Focus on what you CAN do. This might be getting your website in order, sorting out paperwork that you had put off or taking inventory of the available art works.

  2. Connect with networks, groups, forums or societies that you are a part of. Check in with each other and support one another to get through these trying times.

  3. Check in with the galleries that stock your work. Are they closing temporarily or for longer, will the fairs they are showing at go ahead? If the gallery has a good online presence will they be selling online or if your art work that is not on display, then many artists are requesting the works be returned.

  4. Take time to enjoy being with family and the important people around you. It is a time of reflection that gives us space to reconnect and re-evaluate our priorities.

  5. Read a new book, learn something new -maybe a tutorial to help you take better photographs of your art works.

  6. Keep making art - develop your practice without the deadlines of exhibitions and fairs.
