Hype Yourself - Lucy Werner talks about PR for Artists

I’ve been enjoying Hype Yourself, the new book by Lucy Werner all about DIY PR for small businesses. Lucy runs The Wern, a PR agency for small and independent businesses. I invited Lucy on to the podcast to share her wisdom and how artists can get coverage in media to improve their visibility..

Hype Yourself, the DIY PR toolkit

Bestselling author Lucy Werner

In this episode Lucy talks about

  1. researching the places that you want to be featured such as blogs or magazines. She advises subscribing and researching the magazines or journals where you wish to be featured and studying the different columns or features where you might fit, within that magazine.

  2. Newsjacking - using current affairs and topical news items to create art, debate and hijack topics that are already being discussed widely. In this episode Lucy mentions Dave Buonaguidi aka @realhackneydave

  3. Talking yourself, and how it is easier for artists to feature in media when they reveal more about their lives rather than focus only on the art work. Writers are seeking human stories that create connection or inspiration and artists who are ready to talk about other aspects of their life such as being self employed, staying motivated, balancing family and work and so on, can benefit from these call outs.

  4. Finding writers of the columns where you wish to be featured and engaging with them long before you ask for anything. This can be commenting on their social posts or their published articles.
