Ailyn Lee
New York artist Ailyn Lee creates multimedia sculptures, installations and short films that offer surreal spaces of comfort and wonder. Lee’s practice is inspired by her experience coping with chronic insomnia and anxiety. She says: “To escape these chaotic feelings, I began to dream up surreal, theatrical situations that made me feel comfortable, safe, and secure.”
Lee’s childhood was often spent in her grandmother’s antique shop or the studio of her artist mother who made work about the human figure. She now populates her own work with imagery from these happy childhood moments, using antique furniture and fragmented figures reminiscent of her mother’s artwork as symbolic props to create her own world of solace and nostalgia.
