Allison Belolan
Based in Mamaroneck, New York, Allison Belolan creates abstract landscapes in collage and mixed media. She says, “They are meditative reflections of the phenomena of unexpected lines that I encounter and observe in the natural world. A crack in the pavement or the contour of a mountain will inspire me to document it with a photograph, sketch or direct rubbing onto paper. These studies become visual references as I work on larger compositions. A limited colour palette of rich blacks, shimmery greys and vibrant golds, along with repetitive shapes and lines, create a sense of balance and texture. The edges of torn paper and how a composition floats on a page establishes space and resists being bound. As I feel and sense my way through the work, I attempt to leave room for the viewer to do the same.” Allison studied Printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design and graduated in 2001, which was followed by a career as a jewellery and accessories designer in New York’s Fashion District, creating jewellery for brands like Betsy Johnson, Kenneth Cole, and Alfani. About her process, she shares, “Creating is a meditation on observations of nature and emotions combined with intuition and sensory responses to materials.” In 2020, Allison was nominated for Minted.com’s Emerging Artist of the Year.
