Chloe McCarrick
Chloe McCarrick is a London-based photographer and mixed media printmaker.
Best known for her circular cyanotypes, her work explores the endless possibilities of image production in the age of modern printmaking with an aim to reinvent, recycle, redefine, experiment, and preserve.
Chloe is inspired by themes of natural history, influential women, and science. Freedom and experimentation are key factors in developing her personal style, through rule-breaking and fusing art forms and techniques together, taking inspiration from traditional approaches of image-making and giving them a contemporary technological twist.
She says, “Female empowerment is a recurring theme running throughout my work, constructing visual narratives from the lives of extraordinary, trailblazing women - celebrating their achievements, uncovering their struggles, and chronicling the stories of these often unsung (s)heroes.”
In her work, she explores the basic elements of historical image-making; in particular, cameraless photography and cyanotypes, pushing the boundaries of how female photographic portraiture is viewed in the modern world. By examining and developing innovative ways of reworking photographic, painted, and illustrated images through the medium of hand-cut collage and mixed media print techniques, she blends science, darkroom alchemy, and biographical storytelling.
Chloe shares, “My art is devoted to exploring human relationships, storytelling, and symbolism by constructing biographical portraiture of these inspirational female figures. The repeating circular shapes represent life cycles, born from human touch and made from recycled materials, taking on new lives once coated with the light-sensitive solutions and exposed to the elements.”
Chloe exhibits internationally regularly, appearing in Le Salon Nationale Des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Affordable Art Fair and The Other Art Fair, curated by Saatchi Art in London and Los Angeles.
