Dawn Smith

Dawn Smith began her career as a tattoo artist, honing her skills from a young age and building a successful career for 20 years.

“I am a neo-surrealist oil painter, building on the legacy of great female artists like Leonora Carrington and Jane Graverol. I use oil paint to explore my place in a history that has erased women’s contributions. I find the otherworldly, dissociative nature of surrealism appealing. I hope my work can help usher in an updated, more inclusive perspective to surrealism.”

“My paintings may appear to be self-indulgent eye candy, but they are actually allegories and metaphors illustrating the objectification and consumption of femininity. With every brushstroke, I delve deeper into the enigmatic complexities of the human experience, striving to unravel the mysteries of the world and uncover the true essence of self-discovery. Through my art, I am reclaiming female agency in my own unique way. It serves as a conduit for self-reflection and understanding, inviting viewers on a journey of introspection and illumination.”
