Emma Hill
UK-based painter Emma Hill won the #LibertyOpenCall in 2019 with her painting “Graffiti Summer” which was transformed into an iconic Liberty fabric print, documented within their historical archives. She has since collaborated with brands such as Bombette UK to take her designs onto apparel.
About her paintings, she says, “My abstract paintings are raw, self-expressive and contemporary, blurring the lines between impressionism and graffiti. They explore my memories and experiences of nature: of the sea, the sky and the landscape. Instead of following the traditional sense of recording by recognition, my use of colour and texture documents my senses.
In creating, I’m spontaneous and intuitive. Each painting begins with a single brush stroke, starting a conversation. A streak of turquoise leaps over a zig-zag spectrum. Parchment and lilac play beside striking fluorescents. Prussian blue drips like pouring rain and brilliant white miniature dots light up the sky like stars. Paint is thrown wide and poured tight, meandering and flowing, determining our journey in life.”
