Eolia
EOLIA is a conceptual artist based in Bamako, Mali, producing charcoal portraits which aim to explore reflections and identity.
In her first series, The Woman In The Mirror, she used mirrors as her medium, allowing the viewer to be a part of the artwork and see themselves alongside the figures and faces on the surface.
With each piece, the artist draws the eye to a specific emotion that she isolates and magnifies.
She says, “My works explore my emotional journey to self-discovery as a woman and as an artist. In a constant quest for identity, my art is a highly personal narrative.
Each detail carries my thoughts, each shadow expresses my doubts, and each ray of light symbolises hope and my unwavering faith in humanity. In our communities, topics like mental health and self-development are rarely discussed. We rarely talk about it, fearing to seem vulnerable, weak or lost. But the truth is, we are all a bit lost in this world. How can we not be? However successful, beautiful and joyful we seem to be, we all have doubts and trauma. Through my work, I aim to address the taboo around these topics and to make them a personal and collective priority. Choosing to use mirror as a medium is highly significant. Each viewer has a unique vision of the work, depending on the reflection s/he observes in it. It invites each of us on an introspective journey.”
