Harsimran Juneja
Harsimran Juneja keenly explores the effects of conflicts experienced living in different societies, on the human condition. Through texts, drawings and paintings, his subjects include hybrid figurative forms, objects and spaces.
Harsimran shares, “My practice spanning across drawing, text and painting is concerned with ideas of conflict, contradiction and contrast that we experience living within societies. My interests in these ideas are motivated by the tenets of my own nature that are a result of living dual lives of an artist and a businessman. The continuous tension I feel between values and desires, past and present, self and society, fantasy and practicality, order and chaos, empathy and hard-heartedness; influence the dichotomies, the humour, the texts and the subjects in
my works. The narratives that I build as a result reflect on my observations about the human condition - and my own - living in different social, political and cultural landscapes. I am particularly drawn towards the use of texts and re-contextualisation of subjects; memory and its relation with objects, things, spaces and people. I explore these through narrative works that can be interpreted plurally. The texts that I write in my paintings are akin to graffiti on the streets, they tag my paintings and often come out as statements. The hybrid figurative forms
in my works challenge the notion of acceptance - the norms, the beliefs, the traditions. And the spaces are reminiscent of my interactions and my experiences across different geographies in different contexts, and come together to build my story as an artist.”
In July 2021, Harsimran was chosen as an ‘Artist to Watch’ and was interviewed for the ArtConnect Magazine.
