Hedy Parry-Davies
Art and architecture have always had a symbiotic relationship in Hedy Parry-Davies’s life: awareness and sensitivity to spaces, the urban environment, patterns, and colours, and how they are affected by human activity and nature over time.
The artist’s work derives from her observations of the natural and built environment, their textures and the marks left on them by time and human intervention.
As an architect by profession, Hedy says, “Mixed media collages reflect these interests, and provide the freedom to build without constraints. I construct layers using photographs, drawings, found objects, and papers which I manipulate to express a three-dimensional imaginative world.”
“My series of work entitled Beautiful Decay is a response to the patina of age visible in the architectural fabric which I find compelling. I am drawn to these details especially during the course of my conservation work. My intervention extends the composition using graphite, watercolour, and other media, together with found objects, to express the beauty of ageing and the surviving details.”
The artworks incorporate maps, manuscripts, redundant materials, and her own printed photographs. “I combine these to craft compositions experimenting with the tensions between content and form.”
