Joanna Pilarczyk

London-based and Poland-born artist Joanna Pilarczyk found herself inspired by the energy of London when she moved to the city over a decade ago. With her sketchbook always at hand, she would draw people and places at every given opportunity.

The work shown here is a contrast to her earlier work and is from the latest series “Intimate Times” which was created during the time of isolation.

She says, “In my colourfully decorated flat filled with plants, and isolated from family and friends, my surroundings and my partner became my only world, more intensely experienced and observed than ever before. My heightened observations led to the creation of these paintings.

Much of my work from this time focusses on self-portraits and what I found in our relationship during this time together, sharing quiet moments without words spoken.”

When asked about her artmaking, Pilarczyk says “My big pleasure is to observe the light and play with it, find a good composition and translate the reality into painted emotions. I want the viewer to feel the sunlight from my pictures, to enjoy colour and the positive atmosphere. I like to share a piece of my small, intimate space where I can still find the inspiration.”

Pilarcyzk has exhibited widely across Poland and the UK. She holds an MA in art education.
