Julie Flandorfer

Julie Flandorfer paints imagined scenes that are often quirky and awkward based on her memories of growing up in the country and in a small town. Her use of pop culture references, 20th century advertising motifs combined with snippets of nature show the many layers of memories we all have.

“In my artwork, I strive to understand the relationship between people and nature, and often the unnatural world that we’ve created, painting imagined scenes that are often quirky and awkward based on my memories of growing up in the country and in a small town. I love to use pop culture references, 20th century advertising motifs, combined with snippets of nature, to show the many layers of memories we all have. I use bold colors and patterns to pull the viewer in, to spark a memory from their own past. My works emphasize the beauty of life, be it human or nature related, in all its awkwardness, complications, conflicts, and challenges. I’m inspired by vintage advertising and books; especially marbled endpapers and mid-century illustrations.”
