Kate Marsden
Kate Marsden is a London-based artist, with a background in Fashion and Textile Design and Surface Pattern Design. Her design background has long inspired her fine art and illustration work. For many years her focus has been on elevating everyday objects, buildings and locations with the aim of encouraging the viewer to think of these places, spaces and things in a new and refreshing way.
She says: “A desire to alter the viewer’s perception of my subject matter has long been my desired outcome, whether this be via the subversion of a traditional subject, or the beautification of something considered to be ugly or undesirable.”
“Working in mixed media provides the freedom to play and experiment and an increased use of abstraction and bold colours further influence the viewer’s perception of the subject matter.”
“I am definitely a traveller on an ongoing journey when it comes to my work, which is constantly evolving. To quote the designer Paul Smith: ‘You can find inspiration in everything (and if you can’t, look again)’, and in some respects this has been the bane of my existence– I have too many ideas. As time has gone by, I have learnt to embrace this and go with the changes as they come. One thing that does remain consistent is my aim to encourage people to see things in a different way, and to appreciate the beauty in the everyday.”
