Kathryn Armitage

Kathryn Armitage is an artist based in London for whom a love of food has always played a central role in her life, and is still an integral part of how she connects with others. However, this joy is heavily entangled with years of struggle, where she used food (or a lack of) to fight against her body. After studying fine art painting at both Manchester School of Art and Camberwell College of Arts and spending several years working as a commercial food photographer, her practice now draws from her personal experiences over those years. Her work acts as a lens into her own complex and painful relationship with food, body image and mental health.

She says: “I am drawing from personal experience. My work focuses on the connections between food, feminism and the female body, questioning the impact of patriarchal conditioning on female appetite.
For many women, this is the catalyst for the simple, joyful notion of eating no longer being a thing of pleasure, but a cause of self-punishment, fear, and shame.”
