Myra Porter

Myra Porter began painting in 2015 and was pursuing an MFA at the University of Miami when lockdown and Covid 19 changed her plans.

Now working from her studio in Tennesee, she says “I am an Abstract Expressionist, intent on mark-making and exploring the relationship between colors and marks until I find each painting. My work is mostly alla prima and gestural, rather than planned out.”

About the process she shares “The flow of the painting takes several mark making/ exploratory sessions; however, I generally like to engage with a painting on day one until I am happy with the direction it is going.“ “Day one is my favorite day; it is the best feeling to leave the studio on day one, seeing the promise of possibility in a new work I have created.”

“My Abstract works are purely gestural in nature; they originate from spontaneous movements, what I am feeling then, usually over several studio sessions. I like to pick my palette and let the work evolve from there. My work tends to be textural, with thick paint in areas that draw me back to them several times.

Myra is featured inside the Winter 2024 Issue of Art Seen, published November.
