Prachi Gothi
Prachi Gothi is a London-based abstract painter producing large, energetic paintings, which explore the coexistence of conflicting human emotions by capturing forms in a state of flux with a vibrant yet restrained colour palette.
Born and raised in Mumbai, Prachi completed her MA Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design, London, in 2010.
Drawing inspiration from the mundane, Prachi tries to tap into the complexities of our ephemeral daily emotions by attempting to capture the momentum of an evanescent period in time. The colourful palette juxtaposed with a hint of sombre tones highlight both a sense of disconnection and intimacy, simultaneously. Through her works, Prachi attempts to make the viewer enter into and navigate through a unique space of transience that is the process of becoming something else.
She says, “My relationship with painting deals a lot with the attempt to capture the momentum of a transient period in time. I try to tap into the complexities of our daily emotions as individuals in today’s fast-paced society. I enjoy painting on large-scale canvases where I can get physically immersed into the works, bringing out a performative aspect and creating a mix of controlled and uncontrolled moments in the process.
“I rely heavily on juxtapositions in my works where I mutate, stretch, obliterate, and build up several layers to either erase or expose underlying painted areas in order to open up a space for discovery. I endeavour to capture the form in a state of flux without a clear entrance or exit pathway.”
She describes her process as organic, building up the painting in intense, dynamic short bursts as a reaction to the existing layers, forms, and colours, which allows for the exploration of the space in the in-between.
Prachi’s work can be found in collections across India, UK, Europe, and Australia.
