Sarah Bird

Sarah Bird is a London-based collage artist and digital photographer. Her work explores the ambiguity of the idea of “home” in the digital age and lies at the intersect between painting, digital art and photography. Currently, her time is spent teaching and furthering her practice.

Of her work, she says, “In manipulating the digital photographs, the individual elements from which the image is made are revealed, as are the spaces between them. I select hues from these individual pixels and use them to layer washes of colour over some of the resulting shapes, like a reverse of colour-mixing. Most of my photographs are taken in places I find myself in, so could be read as fragmented narratives. Many of the surfaces show traces of human action built up over time, in that sense representing memory and layered, shared viewpoints. This links back to modern technology and how it allows us to connect but also disorientates and misdirects. It creates sanctuaries, panopticons and echo chambers through which we must navigate.”

Sarah studied Fine Art and History of Art at Goldsmiths College. Her work has been used on an album cover for Japanese electronic artist Brockbeats and she has been shortlisted for the Apthorp Prize. She has been a member of ArtCan since 2019 and exhibits regularly in addition to her work being held in private collections in the UK and USA.
