Caroline Jane Harris is my guest on this episode of the podcast. She talks about her exhibition at Kristin Hjellegjerde gallery in Wandsworth, London, titled A Three Dimensional Sky.
Five things i learned from Caroline
She is interested in the idea of the image as object. Her works are layered in the frame and the front layer is cut out, revealing and concealing the images behind.
The subject for these works are landscapes- usually mountains and the sea, however the location is not important to the artwork.
She uses bitmap files to create the stencils, which she cuts out by hand, and these are the front layers in the art work. And they are really hard to photograph
Building on the ideas of layers, she has produced monochrome works which are the same bitmap files used as stencils for print making. The black pieces in the exhibition use a heavy body print material to create texture and depth. The white pieces use spider paper which is is very delicate and makes obvious the use of the human hand that cut them
