Frank Auerbach - The Studios

For its inaugural presentation at Frieze Masters, Frankie Rossi Art Projects presents a booth dedicated to showcasing a rare selection of landscape paintings by one of the twentieth century’s sharpest observers of people and places: Frank Auerbach. One of the greatest living painters of our age,

Auerbach is known for his continuous painting of a few resolute sitters and his cityscapes of London. His own studio, both exterior and interior, is a less recognised subject. He took over the studio in Camden Town from Leon Kossoff in 1954 and has worked there ever since. Rarely leaving, he dedicates himself to his work 365 days a year, tirelessly working in an intensely guarded private space that few have ever seen. Auerbach started painting his studio building in the 1970s, creating works titled To the Studios, then, in 2002, produced his first interior of the studio.

The paintings presented at Frieze Masters will span four decades, starting in 1985 and culminating with a major new work from 2021 that has never been exhibited before. ‘Having had the pleasure of working closely with Frank Auerbach for over five decades and organising many of his previous exhibitions, I can attest to the personal and intimate nature of these works. This presentation of his inventive studio paintings offers a moving insight into a private world.’ - Geoffrey Parton, Director, Frankie Rossi Art Projects.

Frankie Rossi Art Projects is a partnership set up together with John Erle Drax and Geoffrey Parton. Established in 2023 they are the sole, worldwide representative of Frank Auerbach.
