I met up with Remi Rough to talk about his work and his career to date.

Remi is an abstract artist whose work is shown around the world. He takes part in festivals, fairs and is often asked to deliver commissioned work in the form of murals, and art work in the public domain. Alongside this he has a studio practice producing paintings shown in galleries and smaller works that he sells directly to his growing fan base

He started out as a graffiti artist which has served him well when approaching large projects.
He found the graffiti scene very bound in convention despite it's rebellious essence.
He has two studio assistants that help him to produce the work and deliver the commissions.
His next show is with his friends Charley Peters and Peter Lamb at The House of St Barnabas in Soho, London in October 2018. And in November he is planning a show at Moca, Bellenden Road, Peckham.
He has never had an art school education, is self taught and was heavily influenced by the Mondrian Nicholson exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery in 2012
Rough's early work was writing and typography and over the years a reductivist style has evolved in his work. Letters are stripped back and the negative spaces are given as much attention as the positive spaces.
He released a book that shows his evolving style in 2009 which documents his work from the previous two decades. See the book here
Remi is interested in a post graffiti style; it is an aesthetic that he has seen evolve in the work of several artists who started as street artists and now have studio based practices.
