Sebastian Martorana, Stone Sculptor

Sebastian Martorana is a stone sculptor based in Maryland, USA. He started his career as an illustrator before moving into working with stone. His work is figurative often often using domestic objects as inspiration which are carved into stone to tell new stories.

Six things I learned from Sebastian

  1. Going slow was the best advice he was given and still works by.

  2. Stone carving is more affected by the crystaling structure rather than the grain.

  3. The hierarchy of stone, with Carrara marble taking the top spot. (5.43 to 6.38).

  4. Stone carving is still considered dated and traditional by many viewers, because they see the craft and the material before they are able to see the object itself.

  5. People find it difficult to see past the material and the process and skill to see the concepts around the art work.

  6. He is frequently working on public buildings, churches, universities carving donor walls, restoration work, mostly typography
