Claire Hankey
Claire Hankey is an Essex based artist who has exhibited widely. She has appeared in the press and media including the July 2021 issue of Vanity Fair.
About being an artist, Claire says, “I am an abstract artist living by the Thames Estuary in Leigh on Sea, Essex. Textures in nature, worn surfaces filled with history and childhood memories all inspire my work. I find the mental and physical practice of art-making deeply therapeutic and it has become a vital part of my daily life. “
“I am fascinated by texture and have tried to create artworks that show history through their surface; layers of collage and acrylic paint that have been sanded back and worked into repeatedly. Personal letters, vintage sewing patterns, stamps from my late Father’s collection are all examples of collage that I use to embed within the layers of my work. Recently, I have been exploring the theme of connections further, through oil paintings of nature.”
