Liaqat Rasul
Liaqat Rasul graduated in Fashion before moving into fine art.
He works with paper for its intrinsic and functional qualities, love the tactile quality of paper, its different weight, thickness and edges. Rasul obsesses and hoards all kinds of ephemera, paper: envelopes, receipts, bills, accounts, travel tickets, handwritten invoices, cardboard packaging. Paper goes through different journeys and manifests into new forms from stickers to embossed bills. It can be printed or written upon folded, cut, scrunched and perforated papers all welcome and inspected.
Of his art, Liaqat says, “I'm a low tech and spontaneous kind of artist, scissors, scalpel, tapes, cutting mat rulers and pens biros and pencils are ready to hand. I adore colour and working immediately with mark making I want to see results of making various medium of mark. I enjoy working with a 3D element to my collages adding height to different parts of the collage or pleating certain parts. I often use a thread and needle to combine parts of the collage, I don’t do neat and precise I enjoy being a bit messy and not perfect, I think its much more energized and beautiful to view.”
“My inspiration stems working and living in india for 12 years from living in a city like London I love to walk and see things, streets and parks and people and smells, different food places, ethnicities, peoples expressions and character somehow make their way to my Fibre collages, I like to challenge the marker the pen and paper and keep revisiting common techniques and adjusting them I’m inspired by so much I have much more to investigate on how my Art will further reveal itself.”
