Dermot Ryan

Dermot’s studio is located in Dublin, Ireland.

He shares, ”My work is mainly based on landscape. My approach to landscape was greatly influenced back in the 1990’s from watching the filmmaker Wernog Herzog’s ‘Lessons of Darkness’ which documented the burning of the Kuwaiti oilfields. I was impressed by how something so horrific could be made to seem so beautiful. On my many travels since then and particularly the journeys I made between Turkey and Bulgaria by bus I constantly observed the shapes and colours of unfamiliar landscapes which later generated ideas for new artworks. The effect of light on a landscape particularly in the late evening or the headlights of a car at night continue to inspire me. My recent artwork explores nocturnal light through simplified shape, form and colour in order to create a sense of stillness imbued with a hint of tension.”
