Molly McCall

Molly McCall’s studio in Carmel Valley, California, The USA.

Contemporary artist Molly McCall works within multiple mediums with an emphasis on photography. Her work spans the world of painting, drawing, photography, and collage with equal agility. Whether focused on the landscape or elements in the natural world around us, her highly detailed and layered pieces explore the ephemerality, myth, and mystery of memory and the human condition, inviting us to pause and look more deeply. Strongly influenced by both contemporary art, art history, and antiquarian photographic processes, her work often crosses the boundaries of time and inhabits the unexplained without reaching any concrete conclusion or reason.

Moving between the worlds of abstraction and representation, liminal space is conveyed throughout her imagery- No before, no after, no beginning, no end, just a state of mind that transcends beyond knowingness. Through the delicate use of layers, she builds her own world- part what might have been and part what possibly could be, part conscious and part unconscious. Fundamentally a self-taught artist, her work is nourished and sustained by intuition and curiosity. A 4th generation native Californian, she is drawn to the landscape genetically and references from California’s history of literature, poetry, film, and art can often be found throughout her imagery.

Molly is featured on the Autumn Edition of the Art Seen Magazine, Issue 13. See details here.
