Dermot Ryan
Dublin-based printmaker Dermot Ryan graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art Print from Limerick School of Art and Design, and an MA in Fine Art Printmaking from Camberwell College of Arts, London, and was awarded the RK Burt prize at his final show.
He says: “My work is mainly based on landscape. My approach to landscape was greatly influenced back in the nineties by watching the filmmaker Werner Herzog’s Lessons of Darkness, which documented the burning of the Kuwaiti oilfields. I was impressed by how something so horrific could be made to seem so beautiful. On my many travels since then, and particularly the journeys I made between Turkey and Bulgaria by bus, I constantly observed the shapes and colours of unfamiliar landscapes which later generated ideas for new artworks. The effect of light on a landscape particularly in the late evening, or the headlights of a car at night, continue to inspire me.”
