Josie Clouting
Josie Clouting is a painter whose works are intuitive, emotional responses to her natural environment and inspired by the vastness and wonder of the natural world. Saturated with colour and vitality, her works reflect her response to light, atmosphere and topography. Painting and sketching en plein air is a vital part of her practice, enabling her to react to the landscape, playing with immediate brush marks. Experimenting with acrylics on a variety of surfaces and scales, with many large scale paintings as a result, are part of the enjoyment of the creative process. Josie’s physical movements, creating large expansive works, are an expression of the energy she feels within the landscape. Her works attempt to portray the sense of excitement and adventure in discovering the history of a place and the stories of our landscapes.
Josie graduated with a degree in Fine Art from Norwich University of the Arts in 2012. Her work has been shown at both the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and Wales Contemporary. In 2019 she was a finalist in the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, and a finalist in the Holly Bush Emerging Woman Painter Prize in 2020. Working from her studio in Cholsey, South Oxfordshire, UK, Josie was recently commissioned to paint a large scale mural for a large investment company’s office in London.
