Lindsay McCulloch

Lindsay McCulloch is a Maryland-based mixed-media artist who is fascinated by limits, boundaries, and oppositions. She questions, “What are the limits of my materials? What are the limits of my ideas? What are the limits of my references, and can disparate references work together in one piece? Can I make a flat painting that appears dimensional? Can I make a dimensional artwork using a 2D painting vocabulary? Can I form something new that feels familiar? Can I be both serious and playful with my work?” Only recently did she begin creating works in 3D: “The sculptural paintings evolved organically one day in the studio this past summer. I was struggling with a shaped painting, trying to find its resolution. I happened to glance over at some test strips of different colours that I had painted on some large sheets of paper and had a strong impulse to cut them up and add them to the shaped painting. At first I laid them flat, but then I tried a few strips moving away from the surface and the entire painting transformed into something I found to be new and exciting.” Interested in the relationship and the viewer’s involvement with her work, she enjoys giving them the opportunity to move their bodies to take in the entirety of the artwork, making them conscious of their body’s relationship to each piece. Lindsay’s work is featured in numerous collections worldwide.
