Lydia Gerard
Lydia Jewel Gerard is an abstract painter and digital artist based in Tacoma, Washington State. Her work engages ideas of sexuality, safety, and the investigation of light as it relates to emotion. By utilising luminance in her digital work and softness in painting, Gerard explores her own mind but also seeks to understand and engage the minds of others.
She says: “In all iterations of my work, I bring the viewer’s attention to the subtle details, their delicacy and their interconnectivity. Working in multiple overlapping, transparent layers which affect the others above and below, I create a visual representation of my experience. My work is a record of the ongoing process of trying to survive, and maybe thrive, mentally, physically, and spiritually in a world that is constantly subverting my expectations and beliefs. As a result, I find myself creating art that represents multiple simultaneous beliefs or draws attention to conflicting ‘truths.’”
