Mildor Chevalier

Mildor Chevalier is a Haitian visual artist who is based in New York City.

He says: “My work deals with ideas such as belonging, memories, and individual and collective identity. I lived in the Dominican Republic for ten years and have been based in NYC since 2010. My migration journey springs my interest in exploring art making beyond an insular framework. As a response to my multicultural influences, I seek to create visual narratives that speak to the human condition.”

“I create what I call situation-scapes by bringing together architectural natural forms, and sometimes the human figure, to reflect my quest and offer the viewer a space to experience.”

“In Threshold (seen opposite), a lone figure sits under high beams with the complex architecture of the construction engulfing him from above, appearing simultaneously concrete and ethereal.”

“This interplay of solidity and vaporosity provides the image with a sense of duality, reflecting the dreamer’s internal conflict between the allure of imagination and the grips of reality.”
