SHENEQUA

SHENEQUA is an Afro-Caribbean multi-disciplinary artist whose art is centred around weaving.

She says, “My family’s cultural background, conversations with others, and Ghanaian experience influence my art practice. My art is born from the traditional craft of weaving from Africa and transitions into sculpture, performance, textile or “garment” pieces, and installations. Weaving with synthetic hair tells a story about experiences shared with the women in my life who I love and care about. Braiding, Bantu knotting and plaiting represent the hairstyles I grew up with and celebrate ideas of sisterhood, womanhood, sacred space, intimacy, identity, and beauty.”

SHENEQUA received her Master in Design degree from the Art Institute of Chicago under the mentorship of fabric sculptor and performance artist Nick Cave.

In recent years, SHENEQUA has exhibited at Haw Contemporary (Stockyards) in Kansas City, Missouri, Performing Labor at Patricia Sweetow Gallery in San Francisco, CA, The Space We Grow Into at Woman Made Gallery in Chicago, IL, and Mane N’ Tail at The Luminary in St. Louis, MO. She has been a featured artist for Ties that Bind in American Craft Magazine, and in the Kansas City Star, she spoke about her process of weaving synthetic-hair in relationship to the African-American Hair Experience. SHENEQUA has delivered lectures at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco, the Surface Design Association, and the Arlington Heights Memorial Library. Alongside her woven art which allows her to share her story with the world one thread at a time, SHENEQUA is also a mentor to artists.
