Andrea Saltzman

Andrea Saltzman is a New England-based whose interest lies in subverting distinctions between private and public spaces, feminine and masculine, victims and perpetrators.

She says , “My current body of work is anchored by large scale paintings of craftwork and domestic animals. While knitting as a craft has traditionally been associated with passive femininity, the making of baby blankets and holiday scarves, the vast sea of hand-knit pussy hats at the post-inaugural Women’s March on Washington, suggests a different narrative.

Reimagining these tools of domesticity as the shared weapons of resistance, the paintings are intended to be slightly unsettling to the viewer --reminders that sleeping giants sometimes awake, that those previously silenced sometimes find their voice, and that those who previously counted themselves as secure in their power over others may be less safe than they imagine.”
