Nehal Desai

Nehal’s work draws parallels from a deep longing to connect to the all pervasive, eternally present interconnectedness with nature and all its sentient beings. It is in this attempt to camouflage her existence with the deep mystic realms of nature that she finds her artistic voice.

Her work is participatory, sometimes drawing the onlooker within to take a stroll or observe the details to much of the times making herself a part of the larger-than-life drama that unfolds within her canvasses. Her choice of big scale works is governed by her innate longing to use her body, to dance, celebrate through the movements that take place while creating a piece. It is also an attempt to make herself a part of the work, claiming it bigger than herself, a hope to surrender and seek a place within.

Nehal uses a process of note making, it involves a regular study of the botanical & plant nomenclature through field trips, books & botanical illustrations. These act as preparatory sketches and building blocks for diving into the unknown in her works. Her style of working involves drawing directly onto the canvasses most often without visual references, drawing studies from visual and muscle memory. This opens possibilities for play, additions and subtractions of forms, backgrounds and foregrounds leaving a scope of suspense to the final outcome.
