Andrew Fish

Andrew Fish is an American painter and printmaker who studied at School of Visual Arts in NYC and has attended several artist residencies, both internationally and domestic. He exhibits frequently and is the recipient of a Mass Cultural Council award in Painting, a Somerville Arts Council grant, a NY Studio School Award, and the Curators Choice Award from the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition. He teaches drawing and painting at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, MA and Lesley Art and Design in Cambridge, MA.

For Andrew and his works, he shares, “My work presents an open narrative. The personal becomes ambiguous. I create images that use figuration to investigate contemporary society and the complexities therein.

I begin my paintings with abstraction, working intuitively with various tools to express my ideas through a vocabulary of mark-making. (ie. squiggle, swoosh, scrape, stencil, etc.) The emotive quality of color is also evoked.

When the abstract under-painting is complete, I apply representational imagery derived from photographs (my own and others) to work in concert with the abstraction. This process allows me to surprise myself and create compositions that are both harmonious and discordant. The photographs are often spontaneous snapshots based on personal experience and include a figurative element.”
