Sarah Nelson
Having trained as a Theatre Designer at The Central, St Martin’s College of Art and Design, London, Sarah worked as a Set Designer and Art Director before turning her passion for drawing into a career as a full time artist. Moving to a dramatic coastal landscape compelled her to create her own impressions of it.
Sarah loves the fluidity of watercolour, ink on paper and the strength and impact of white space, her painterly drawings convey a sense of movement and mood through dynamic mark making.
She says about her art that, “I acknowledge my journey through life and work instinctively, telling a story using strong line and organic mark making within my art. These large fluid ink drawings of giant crested Saguaro cacti aim to create character through the joy of line. There are distinct parallels between my experience of being locked down, the desire to be noticed during this period of anonymity and the subconscious selection of a subject that is symbolic of endurance. Within the quiet space of lockdown it seemed natural to me to create uncomplicated large bold paintings. The brush strokes come from within, intense black lines on pure crisp white paper. The drawings are permanent and emblematic gestures satisfying both a need to travel and an expression of self.”
