Suzanne Southerton
Suzanne Southerton grew up in Germany, and attended Ulster University. After living in various locations with with her husband in the Armed Forces, she now works from her studio in Bedfordshire, working full-time again and concentrating on her practice. She says “.Not a moment in the studio is wasted. I am either doing commissioned portraits or my personal work.”
About her work, Southerton shares that, “I'm an oil-painter based in Bedfordshire. During the Covid pandemic I painted myself a lot. It expanded with portraits of others which in turn led to a more figurative series including surreal backgrounds. This narrative is creeping in and I'm eager to share because it's inspired by symptoms that I'm experiencing myself, journeying through the menopause.”
”Ultimately I choose to be an artist showing you my truth, visually, with female imagery, but also my inner self, with conceptual backgrounds and symbolism which represents how I tick.”
“Following on from my current art practice I am about to embark on another series of larger scale, figurative pieces, which combine the female figure, ambiguous backgrounds and also the floral studies I'm doing right now into a cohesion. The menopause theme has been running for almost two years and shows no signs of stopping yet...I have a lot of material and a vision.”
