Laura Silverman

Laura Silverman’s studio at Baltimore, Maryland.

While living in Aix as an American abroad for two years, she created a series of artworks centred around life in the Mediterranean city, in addition to exploring the notion of space, her identity, and her corporeality through life-size self portraits.

Silverman works plein-air and in her studio from her own photographs and imagination.

She says: “My work is a reflection on finding one’s place in the world. My landscapes and cityscapes depict scenes often overlooked in everyday life, like small alleys with trash or fields of grass, so the viewer has the experience of a local inhabitant. Through these landscapes, the viewer is made to appreciate opportunities of sunlight and beauty in the mundane. I am curious about the natural biology of towns and cities. I investigate the ways in which plants, nature, and ecology are intertwined within the landscape, and how the local environment shapes one’s identity.”
