Caryl Hull Leavitt

Caryl Hull Leavitt is a figurative artist working with oils, painted paper collage and cardboard sculpture; all mediums that have an immediacy and richness that allows her to work directly from observation.

Trained in abstract expressionism, she then went on to build her 25+ year career as founder and creative director of a design and branding firm servicing biotech companies.

Since 2017 or so, Hull Leavitt focused most of her time on fine arts. She uses shape, color and pattern to capture a scene. While her subject matter has changed over time, elements of abstraction creep in, maintaining the “expressionist” qualities from early years.

About her being an artist, she says, “I work from observation, memory and intuition. I paint what I love, what catches my eye and piques my curiosity. A scene or a gesture interpreted through colors, shapes and the richness of paint itself coming together in a dynamic way, that’s where my interests lie. While I look to the natural world, art history, and daily life for inspiration, the pandemic has drawn my focus to my immediate surroundings with my family and myself as my primary muse. Gone are the studio models holding poses, replaced by me, in and out of the shower reflected in the mirror, or my very busy husband finally relaxing on the couch, or reading a paper. Finding the beauty and interest in unremarkable, all-too-familiar acts seems to have its own sense of purpose these days—and irony.”

Her works have been exhibited in numerous group shows throughout the East Coast and Mid West, a recent solo exhibit at National Boston, a two-person exhibit at ConcordArts, an invitational at Allttelboro Arts Museum, and a current group show at Blue Mountain Gallery in NYC all of which she is quite proud of.
