Gregory Knight
Canadian-based contemporary realist painter, Gregory Knight has been painting actively since 2006. A graduate of film and art school, Gregory has continued his passion to utilize film photography skills with his painting experience to blend his two passions together. He primarily paints in oil or acrylic but also paints traditional landscapes in watercolour.
Typically painting from various photographs of anonymous streets he introduces an underlying theme not recognised at first glance. These carefully selected scenes can be of ordinary people, from movies, and music, or places within an urban landscape that can evoke a feeling of remembrance.
With his art, Gregory shares, “I paint for the challenge and try to produce a piece of art that isn't just a replication of a photograph, but something that is more personal to me. The subjects that captivate me the most are urban history, streets, buildings, people, and the space and time between locations - before and after. Many of my paintings include contrasting light from the midday sun as I want to convey the sharpness of it or display how it dissolves in shadow. In my work, I strive to bring a memento to the viewer. I often add people from my life into the painting or add a reference here or there, whether in a sign, an object, or the entire scene itself. Ultimately my passion for painting is to reimagine a story with my brush.”
