Owen Brown

Owen Brown studied at California College of Arts, and has degrees from Yale College and the University of Chicago. After 30 years in San Francisco, where he was represented by Meridian Gallery, he moved to Minneapolis.

About his art, Owen says, “I was taught in the figurative tradition, but I also work abstractly: I don’t always have a theme to put forth. I don’t know how I will finish when I start, except there is something within that I want to express, something I want to build, something I want to say. Painting is not speech, even when it shows a scene. We leap to story; my subject matter is the story behind story.”

Brown has exhibited throughout the US. Works have been acquired by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Nature Conservancy, and the Weisman Museum, and can be found in corporate and private collections in that country and abroad. In Minnesota, he shows at Grand Hand and Veronique Wantz, on Artsy he is represented by Gallery 13.
