Laura Parker

Laura Parker is a self-taught artist and painter based in the London area. Laura enjoys depicting the world around her, from dramatic underwater views, to expansive landscapes, intimate still lifes, and abstract works.

She works predominantly in acrylics or oils, but also explores the use of other materials. She uses her love of colour to enhance and add drama, so bringing energy and vitality to a painting and helping to communicate her artistic vision.

She says “At fifty, I began painting portraits and the human figure in oils. I explored landscape painting, going outside to paint ‘en plein air’, often waking at 4am to capture the sun rising over the River Thames. I used my experiences as a scuba-diver to interpret the underwater world in paint.”

“Currently I find greater freedom of self expression in working more abstractly, capturing a sense of ‘landscape’ that is less representational but more emotional, expressive and authentic to my artistic vision. I use bold acrylic colours to guide the eye across a canvas, punctuating the space with vertical shapes, just as strong enduring trees do in nature, and creating a sense of depth and distance with a hinted-at horizon. Originally my underwater paintings of wrecks deep under the sea were fairly realistic, but abstracting those forms has become a natural progression. I find that this adds mystery and intrigue to the depiction of rusting hulls, pierced with jagged holes, where strange silhouettes fascinate the artist in me.”
